The Beaches of Porto Azzurro
Choose the perfect beach for your holiday, from equipped beaches to secluded coves.
Dog Beach Mola - La Rossa - La Pianotta - Barbarossa - La Ripa - Reale - Terranera
The beaches of Porto Azzurro are located in the center of the eastern side of the Island of Elba. Starting from the south near the town of Capoliveri, the first beach we encounter is Dog Beach di Mola, the only beach on the Island of Elba dedicated to dogs, offering many services for our four-legged friends. Moving further into town, there's the beach called La Rossa, a small beach accessible from the center of Porto Azzurro. Continuing along the promenade, you'll find the delightful beach of La Pianotta, with white pebbles and rocks where you can sunbathe.
Continuing on the Carmignani promenade, a scenic equipped trail, you'll come across the cliffs of Tre Punte, a favorite spot for youngsters to dive into the sea from various heights. At the end of the Carmignani promenade, you'll arrive directly at Barbarossa Beach, the largest beach in the entire Porto Azzurro area, consisting of sand and small pebbles.
From Barbarossa Beach, continue along the coast and you'll find two lesser-known, unmarked and hard-to-reach small cliffs: Ripa Beach and Piattaforma Beach, composed of rocks where you can sunbathe and dive.
Following the road in the Capobianco area, you'll reach Reale Beach, a large beach of sand and small pebbles complete with all amenities. From Reale Beach, in about 5 minutes on foot, you'll reach the last beach of Porto Azzurro, right on the border with the town of Rio Marina: Terranera Beach and Lake.

Dog Beach of Mola
Dog Beach di Mola is located within the famous Gulf of Mola. It is the only official Dog Beach on the Island of Elba, with two convenient entrances via dirt roads: one from the Capoliveri side and the other from Porto Azzurro.
It is situated in one of the most important wetland areas of the Island of Elba, where migratory birds often make a stopover.
Since 2006, Dog Beach has been set up—a roughly 500 square meter equipped beach dedicated to bathing for dogs and their companions. It offers many amenities for our four-legged friends, including sunbeds, umbrellas, a bowl of fresh water, and a final rinse with fresh water.
The beach at Mola in Porto Azzurro is characterized by shallow waters, especially during low tide, extending for many meters from the shore. This allows our furry friends to chase each other and play in the water and on the beach around their owners.

Barbarossa Beach
Barbarossa Beach is located 1 km from the center of Porto Azzurro and can be reached by car by taking the right turn on the provincial road towards Rio Marina. Alternatively, we recommend taking the Carmignani promenade on foot, a equipped path that connects Barbarossa Beach to the center and waterfront of Porto Azzurro.
Barbarossa Beach is made up of small to medium-sized dark gravel, and its seabed features beautiful rocky coves, ideal for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.
In the northern part, after a 10-minute swim, you can reach Caletta di Barbarossa, a pleasant bay enclosed by cliffs in a very picturesque red earth landscape.
From Barbarossa Beach, we recommend taking the Carmignani promenade, which connects the beach to the town, following the perimeter of the walls of Forte S. Giacomo, which today still serves as a prison.
Suitable for families and especially for young people, given the numerous accommodations available, such as campsites and apartments.

La Ripa Beach
Ripa Beach is a small, lesser-known beach located a few tens of meters after Barbarossa Beach, continuing on the road to the left of the beach that connects Barbarossa to the nearby Reale Beach. You'll find a small, unmarked path that seems to lead to abandoned buildings along the coast. Instead, continuing through the Mediterranean scrub, you'll first encounter a large area of fairly smooth rocks ideal for diving or sunbathing, followed by a small beach of medium to large gray pebbles.
Ripa Beach is also known as Falchetto Beach because many years ago, the area was used as a nesting area by falcons.
Ripa Beach is practically deserted even in high season and is mainly used by those who reach it with small boats or kayaks. Although not well-known, it is easily visible from the sea due to the barren, reddish "ripa" (cliff) located at the back of the beach, resembling a beard which, for some, is the reason for the name "Barbarossa" of the nearby and more famous beach.
There are no services on the beach, so it's necessary to bring everything you need. It's also important to consider the fairly steep path that doesn't allow for carrying heavy loads or equipment.

Terranera Beach and Lake
Terranera Beach and Lagoon are located at the outskirts of Porto Azzurro and are easily accessible by car via Provincial Road 26 from Porto Azzurro towards Rio Marina. After taking the right turn towards Capo d'Arco, follow the signs for Reale Beach and continue towards Terranera Lagoon.
Terranera Beach has two accesses, but the simplest way to reach it is from Reale Beach. By car, continue along the road that runs alongside the beach and ends at a large unpaved parking area. Alternatively, after a short walk through a picturesque natural landscape of great geological interest due to its mineral origins, you arrive at a charming and wild cove with black sand, shimmering due to the presence of hematite and pyrite crystals.
Exposed to the open sea and primarily reached by eastern winds, the beach is popular for its natural features.
In this stretch of coast, there is a lagoon known as Terranera Lagoon, with green-colored water of sulfuric origin, separated from the open sea by a small strip of beach. Swimming is prohibited for safety reasons due to the very dense and heavy freshwater caused by sulfur presence. If you wish to swim in it, it is advised to stay close to the shore, being cautious of the muddy bottom that quickly becomes very deep.
